Description of Morgan Lewis Octave Mandola Rosewood

The new Lewis Octave Mandolins are a culmination of over 30 years instrument design experience from Leeds based instrument builder "Oakwood instruments". The Lewis Deluxe Rosewood Octave Mandolin is yet another fine example fine musical instrument design from master luthier, Martyn Banks.
 
Carefully sourced from high grade timber stock, the Lewis Deluxe rosewood Octave Mandolin has a solid spruce top which is X braced. 
The back and sides are constructed from high quality rosewood. 
The tonal characteristics of rosewood give a slightly scooped mid range with nice clear highs and plenty of bass response.
The rosewood body is superbly finished in a clear nitrocellulose lacquer.
This type of finish is regarded by many as preferable to modern polyurethane finishes where acoustic instruments are concerned as it allows the various tone woods to vibrate more freely.
 
The Lewis rosewood Deluxe Octave Mandolin is double bound in maple and padauk. Padauk is a beautiful and hard wearing African red wood which creates a nice contrast to the rich dark brown of the rosewood back and sides.
The oval sound hole is decorated with a simple but eye catching abalone ring
 
The ebony bridge is of the "static" variety.
This is well known to aid tuning stability and even more importantly more consistent intonation than the "floating bridge" configuration.
The bridge saddle is finely carved bone and neatly set in the bridges compensated slot.
